Balinese “Fire War”: Mesabatan Api
The day before Nyepi “Silence Day” which marks the Balinese New Year based on the lunar calendar, a ceremony called Mesabatan Api “Fire War” takes place in the very village of Pakriaman Nagi in the regency of Gianyar. This ritual which takes place in Ubud symbolizes the purification of human and universe through fire. It involves Balinese men living in the village and burned coconut husks. Men lash the burn coconuts off each other before meditating, fasting and self-reflecting the next day. The ceremony is an annual unique event in the World, that is only performed and seen on the island of Gods: Bali.
